The initial acquisition of Castlewood State Park took place in 1974 as part of a broader effort to preserve significant natural areas in Missouri. At the time, Castlewood was a popular recreational spot, known for its scenic beauty along the Meramec River and its history as a resort destination in the early 20th century. The park’s acquisition by the state was driven by a desire to protect this important natural area from development and to ensure that it remained accessible to the public.

The land was acquired through a partnership between the state of Missouri and local conservation groups, with Open Space STL playing a key role in raising funds and negotiating with landowners. The acquisition was seen as a major victory for conservation in the region, preserving over 1,800 acres of land that now includes trails, picnic areas, and other recreational facilities.

We created this shirt to celebrate 50 years of this monumental achievement and to promote the continual efforts in restoration & protection Open Space STL provides for some of our favorite places in Missouri.
