Before it became a state park, this stretch of Route 66 was home to one of Missouri's most notorious environmental disasters.

In the 1970s, the town of Times Beach was contaminated with dioxin, a highly toxic chemical. After a devastating flood in 1982, the contamination made national headlines, forcing the federal government to buy out the town and relocate its residents.

Today, the former town is Route 66 State Park, where visitors can explore a landscape with one of the strangest histories in Missouri.
